What types of COVID-19 testing does St. Nicholas Medical Center offer?

St.Nicholas Medical Center is offering COVID-19 evaluations and testing to help support our patients health care needs amid the pandemic.

Please note that for the most accurate COVID-19 test results, for individuals who are not showing symptoms, but who have had close contact with an individual who has tested positively for COVID-19, wait five to seven days after the known exposure to get a COVID-19 test.

Additionally, Bulgarian Ministry of Health  recommend self-quarantining for 10 days after a known exposure to COVID-19, even if no symptoms are present.

What is the difference between a COVID-19 send-out PCR lab test and rapid antigen test?

Every individual who seeks COVID-19-related care at a St. Nicholas Medical Center will receive an evaluation by one of our health care professionals who will help determine if a COVID-19 test is needed, as well as the most appropriate method for testing. Our testing capabilities currently include both:

  • COVID-19 Send-Out PCR Lab Test

The Bulgarian Ministry of Health recommends the COVID-19 send-out PCR lab test, as it is considered the most sensitive.

  • COVID-19 Rapid Antigen Test

The COVID-19 rapid antigen test provides results in less time. However, they are less sensitive* than the COVID-19 send-out PCR lab test.

What type of COVID-19 test will I receive?

St. Nicholas Medical Center is currently offering both COVID-19 rapid antigen testing and send-out PCR lab testing.

Following an evaluation, our health care professionals will determine the most appropriate method of testing, based on:

  • Bulgarian Ministry of Health recommendations and considerations

  • Type and duration of symptoms

  • Known contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19

  • Pre-procedural, occupational or travel testing considerations
